Carter Reum is the co-founder of M13, a brand development and investment company accelerating businesses at the nexus of consumer products, technology, and media. M13 focuses on building emerging entrepreneurial businesses in Los Angeles, leading more than $100 million of investments over the next 5 years.
Leaving Goldman Sachs investment banking with an idea to create “a better way to drink,” Carter and his brother Courtney Reum built VEEV Spirits, a 70 proof vodka alternative that became a pioneering artisanal alcohol brand in the spirits industry, helping to popularize the açaí berry in the United States into one of the fastest growing independent spirit brands in the country. VEEV Spirits has won a range of awards such as Technomic Fast 50, Inc 500 Fast Growth and Beverage Industry Growth Brand award.
While growing VEEV Spirits, Carter and his brother began investing in other companies providing first hand experiences, guidance and capitalization to many emerging businesses. In April 2016, Carter and Courtney sold a majority stake of VEEV Spirits to a larger company allowing them to start M13 and focus on their entrepreneurial stewardship of consumer brands. M13 has investments and involvement in more than 100 companies spanning consumer brands, media and technology. Carter has also become an active angel investor investing in brands that include Pinterest, Lyft, Munchery, Birchbox, Bonobos, Surf Air, Matterport, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Suja.
Carter has been honored by several entrepreneurial groups such as the “30 Under 30” list, the Inc “500 fastest growing private companies in America,” Richard Branson’s best-selling book “Screw Business as Usual” and most recently the Goldman Sachs Builders + Innovators 100 “Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs” in the country.
Carter grew up in Chicago and holds a B.A. with distinction from Columbia University in New York, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA (#2 in his class). Carter currently a contributing writer for INC Magazine.
In June 2017, Carter was appointed to the LACMA Board of Trustees as he has vested interest in shaping the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
In July of 2017, Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, hand selected Courtney & Carter Reum to work on the City’s branding initiatives and partner engagements as part of the Mayor’s office EIR program. This signature Executive in Residence program was created in an effort to merge the arts and entertainment industries with traditional consumer product industries. The Executive in Residence program is an independent project created to build new opportunities for local designers, artists, and manufacturers and the knowledge & experience that Courtney & Carter offer is unmatched.
Finally, Courtney & Carter launched Shortcut Your Startup with Simon & Schuster in January 2017 in order to share their insights and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs.
